POSTERS OF THE WORLD WAR II ERA

I remember seeing the posters promoting citizen participation on the home front during WWII.
These posters encouraged the greater public to become involved in war production and growing victory gardens. They persuaded folks to collect and turn in old newspapers and metal, including nylon stockings for recycling.

There were posters to make citizens aware of the presence of enemy spies among the populace, and urged people not to openly discuss any knowledge they have of military or defense operations. Hence, the adage, loose lips sink ships.

Posters encouraged people to drive less and conserve gasoline so that more could be available for the military. Patriotism became the central theme of advertising throughout the war. Large-scale campaigns were launched to sell war bonds, promote efficiency in factories, and maintain civilian morale.

QUEEN OF THE CUBAN SPIES
During the 1960's Cuba took advantage of America's open door policy by allowing thousands of her people to migrate to the United States.

Among the refugees were spies who managed to became employees of the U.S. Government in positions that gave them access to classified material. The information that these operatives provided Havana was, for a price, made available to foreign powers such as China, Russia, and Iran.

The least known but most infamous of Cuban spies was Anna Montes. She was not Cuban, but an American citizen of Puerto Rican heritage. She was born in Germany on a U.S. Army base where her father served as a doctor.

Anna, a highly educated woman, was greatly displeased with America's policy of manipulating the governments of Central and South America. After graduating from college, she landed a Government job with the U.S. Justice Department, and later transferred to the DIA, (Department of Military Intelligence).

She memorized classified documents and sent the information as coded messages to Cuba. In 1987, information that Martinez provided Havana made its way to the El Salvadorian government who in turn, used the information to identify American agents involved in clandestine operations in that country.

The FBI became aware of Martinez's espionage activities in 1998, and began to monitor and collect evidence against her. The agents were shocked to learn that her spying activities went undetected for seventeen years.
In 2001, FBI agents placed her under arrest for spying. In exchange for details that she provided about spying, she avoided a public trail and is now serving a 25-year sentence in prison for espionage.
